24 April 2025 | Nigel Bertram Visitor Centre, C/O National Pig Centre 🐷, Spen Farm, Paradise Way, Tadcaster, LS24 9GF
The pig sector has made remarkable progress in antibiotic stewardship, achieving a 69% reduction in usage from 2015 to 2023. However, recent data suggests we’ve reached a plateau. What are the barriers to further reductions, and how do we address them while prioritizing pig health and welfare?
A Cross-Sector Approach
The AMAST Network and the University of Cambridge’s Department of Veterinary Medicine, in collaboration with the University of Leeds, UK Agritech Centre, AHDB Pork, APHA, NPA, and the UK Pig Veterinary Society, are hosting a transdisciplinary forum to address these questions head-on.
This one-day event will bring together producers, veterinarians, researchers, policymakers, and other stakeholders to develop an informed, realistic, and achievable action plan for the future of antibiotic stewardship in the pig sector.
Event Highlights
The forum will focus on two key discussion areas:
- The Producer Perspective: Exploring practical opportunities and challenges on farms
- The Prescriber Perspective: Understanding different views on the reasons for ongoing antibiotic use
In-person attendees will have the opportunity to tour the state-of-the-art pig production facility at the National Pig Centre. The centre, launched in 2019 with investment from the UK Agri-Tech Centre, represents the cutting edge of pig research and production practices.
Additionally, early career researchers and practitioners from the pig farm will showcase their work, creating networking opportunities and highlighting innovative approaches to pig health and production.
Expected Outcomes
The forum aims to help the pig sector:
- Identify the underlying factors driving continued antibiotic use
- Understand the gaps and barriers to implementing antibiotic-reduction measures
- Develop both short-term practical actions and long-term research priorities
